The State Government of Victoria recently donated a consignment of essential medicines worth AUD 257,000 (approximately SLRs. 66 Mn), including antibiotics, pain relief medications, anti-inflammatory and neuromuscular blocking agents.
Recognizing the deep and rich bilateral relations between Victoria and Sri Lanka and the strong Sri Lankan community in Victoria, Hon. Mary-Anne Tomas MP, Minister of Health and Minister for Ambulance Services in Victoria acknowledged the challenges currently facing Sri Lanka, particularly in obtaining essential medicines, and assured the Victorian government’s readiness to support Sri Lanka in its time of need.
The donation was made in response to a request by the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Melbourne for assistance to support the Sri Lanka public health system, which was impacted by the prevailing economic crisis.
The Consulate General coordinated with SriLankan Airlines to successfully airlift this donation from Melbourne to Colombo free of charge.
