Consul General of Sri Lanka meets officials of the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions of Victoria to deepen Trade, Education and Sports Partnership with Sri Lanka
Consul General of Sri Lanka in Melbourne, Pradeepa Saram met with the officials of the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions of Victoria State Government at International Chamber House on 21 July 2025, and discussed opportunities for trade and investment promotion between Sri Lanka and Victoria, with a focus on sectors such as apparel & textile, gems & jewellery, electrical & electronics and rubber–based products.
During the meeting Consul General alluded that Sri Lankan-born business people are a vibrant part of Melbourne’s business landscape and are accomplishing success in various sectors. Many have established, successful businesses and contribute significantly to the Victorian and Sri Lankan economies. Victoria is home to the largest Sri Lankan born community in Australia
The contributions Victorian companies can make to the Sri Lankan economy in sectors such as trade & investment, agriculture, education and healthcare, according to comments made at the meeting by the Victorian State government officials.
Education partnerships continue to grow between Victoria and Sri Lanka with strong enrolments in Victoria and partnerships with Sri Lankan providers to deliver courses for both universities and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) providers. Partner institutions in Sri Lanka have experienced in delivering Victorian higher education and vocational qualifications across business, engineering, IT, science and hospitality.
Both sides noted that sports collaborations are also emerging as an exciting opportunity for Victoria in Sri Lanka. During recent visit to Sri Lanka by Global Victoria’s Commissioner to South Asia, Michelle Wade met with the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports and discussed sports opportunities which align with Victoria’s strength that include sports medicine, high performance facilities and plans for a sports university.
Consul General asserted the important role of furthering business relationships for the mutual benefits of Victoria-Sri Lanka partnerships and to tap the vast potential for future collaborations.
