Consul General Pradeepa Saram met with Scott Veenker, Chief Executive at Committee for Melbourne, Victorian Chamber of Commerce & Industry and stated that Sri Lanka is focusing on diversifying its export basket beyond traditional products like tea, rubber & apparel and looking into sectors like renewable energy, IT services, education, logistics and electronics for new opportunities. Australia is identified as a potential partner in this diversification effort, Consul General further said.
Mr. Veenker, Chief Executive – Committee for Melbourne underscored the rich people-to-people contacts as one of the most important segment of the trade relationship between Victoria and Sri Lanka. Mr. Veenker accentuated that Victorian government will actively pursue to strengthen trade and investment links with Sri Lanka, particularly through initiatives like trade delegations and market access support. Victoria has the largest goods export relationship with Sri Lanka of all Australian states and territories.
Chief Executive – Committee for Melbourne invited Sri Lankan Trade Chambers to strongly consider in participating at 14th edition of the World Chambers Congress co-organised by the ICC World Chambers Federation (WCF) and the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), which is set to take place in Melbourne, Australia, 2-4 September 2025. The Congress is intended to promote trade between countries and will be a platform to create new business opportunities, and discuss global challenges impacting businesses, with a focus on global trade.
Sri Lanka and Australia have a strong trade relationship, with Australia being one of Sri Lanka’s key export destinations. In 2024, Sri Lanka’s main exports to Australia included textiles, rubber products, and other consumer goods.
